Hapag-Lloyd IoT Pilot Live

Hapag-Lloyd and WiseTech Global have launched a trail project to integrate IoT-based container tracking to deliver real-time visibility across global supply chains.

WiseTech global, an Australian supply chain technology solutions company, is working with Hapag-Lloyd to test the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology for real-time global container visibility, tracking, and data collecting.

IoT devices installed in Hapag-Lloyd's fleet of 2 m containers regularly send location updates straight to WiseTech's network of platforms for the supply chain, logistics, and international commerce sectors. Specifically, this trial examines the capacity to receive and interpret millions of data points every day, using advanced algorithms to convert the IoT data into significant standards and outputs that inform choices.

Karsten Schmidt, the director of Hapag-Lloyd's Live Position and Track & Trace said they have invested in equipping our entire dry container fleet with IoT technology to provide better service and reliability to our customers. Working with WiseTech, they can integrate the data from their smart containers into the systems their customers use every day, providing actionable predictive insights rather than just dots on a map.

WiseTech stated that this initiative marks a pivotal moment for the industry, as carriers and technology providers work together to bridge the gap between raw IoT data and actionable supply chain intelligence.

The partnership provides real-time information about container position, transit conditions, and arrival projections. Customers can identify delays, route deviations, and potential disruptions before they affect operations. Hapag-Lloyd has also created Live ETA, a dynamic estimated time of arrival tool that adapts in real time based on IoT location data from all modes of transport. The approach enhances delivery time accuracy for end-to-end shipments by up to 75% when compared to standard schedule-based estimates.

The partners will evaluate user feedback, scalability, and data quality as the trial goes on and then work towards the objective of providing global supply chains with a fully integrated, value-added ocean container visibility solution. The project, according to WiseTech, is a turning point for the sector as tech companies strive for a global supply chain that is more resilient, transparent, and digitally enabled.
