Poly’s comeback uses fast AI search and generous free storage to change older, slower cloud-storage options.
Poly is reintroducing its cloud file storage solution with machine learning-based search. Users are given 100 GB of free storage on launch. Poly is creating this product for the second time. Sam Yung and Abhay Agarwal launched the business in 2022, but Yung later quit. The startup took part in YC at the time and let individuals make 3D graphics based on prompts.
According to Agarwal, a research scientist at Microsoft who focused on computer-vision technology to help people with visual impairments, the image-creation sector had developed so rapidly that major investment rounds and competitors had developed. The team made the decision to change strategy as a result.
User surveys revealed that ineffective file organization and a large number of files on computers that are difficult to locate were the primary sources of frustration. Poly went into stealth mode and started working on a new cloud file organizer after the previous version of the company was shut down in 2023. The team aims to include online search, a text and Markdown editor, the option to add custom metadata, and support for building styled reports within the app in the upcoming months. Additionally, it will be possible to create AI agents for computations and data analysis in spreadsheets, as well as add links to Google Docs.
Dropbox and Google Drive, both of which have their own search features, are competitors that Poly intends to take on. After only a few days of use, the application showed both the benefit of adding a YouTube link to acquire a summary and efficient search, occasionally even exceeding Google. 100 GB of free storage much more than many competitors is one of the key advantages. Also, 2 TB is available for $10 a month. Direct photo syncing might be in the future.
