Business Fortune: Live-Action Dragon Soars on JioHotstar

JioHotstar will begin streaming the live-action version, which stars Mason Thames and Nico Parker, on October 13, so that fans can relive the endearing Viking-dragon bond.

After a successful theatrical run, the live-action "How to Train Your Dragon" movie will soon be available on over-the-top (OTT) platforms, allowing fans to relive the emotional bond between Hiccup and Toothless. On October 13, JioHotstar will release a version of the popular animated series of the same name.

Mason Thames plays Hiccup and Nico Parker plays Astrid in the live-action version, which was directed by Dean DeBlois, who also co-wrote and directed the two animated movies. Stoick the Vast, Hiccup's father, is portrayed by Gerard Butler. Other members of the supporting cast include Murray McArthur, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Bronwyn James, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Nick Frost, and Peter Serafinowicz.

Based on a Cressida Cowell book series, the film series follows the exploits of Hiccup, a quirky adolescent Viking who, one day in the legendary Viking settlement of Berk, stumbles upon an injured dragon. Throughout the story, Hiccup and the dragon develop an unbreakable and enduring relationship when Hiccup names the dragon Toothless.

The movie received favorable reviews when it was released in June of this year and made over $635.7 million worldwide. It is the highest-grossing movie in the franchise and the fifth-highest-grossing movie of 2025. The movie was referred to as a "comfort food cinema" in its CE review. This explains why seeing the live-action adaptation of the animated movie of the same name, "How to Train Your Dragon," does not turn into a franchise fatigue exercise. "The film does not feel like a mere rehash of the original, even though it closely follows 2010's How to Train Your Dragon," Sreejith Mullappilly remarked.

On June 11, 2027, the live-action versions of the second segment of the animated movie How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will be released.
