With a $187 million worldwide opening, "The Conjuring: Last Rites" breaks all previous horror box office records.
This year, horror movies are very popular, and "The Conjuring: Last Rites" was no exception. The genre earned over $1 billion at the domestic movie office this year thanks to its debut weekend. At $83 million in 3,802 theaters, the horror sequel was the third-best national opening for a horror film, after "It" and "It: Chapter Two."
It has made $104 million outside of North American theaters, making it the biggest horror opening globally. Foreign markets outperformed forecasts, bringing in a staggering $100+ million over modest estimates of about $50 million. Due to its impressive performance, the movie's global opening total surpassed its $55 million production budget, reaching $187 million.
It also broke the previous record for the biggest overseas opening for a horror movie in the business, surpassing the $92.5 million earned by another New Line picture, "It: Chapter Two. "The movie opened with an incredible $187 million globally. It marks the franchise’s strongest debut to date and ranks as the third-largest opening for a horror film in history
Critics have had mixed feelings about the film; the film has been rated at 55 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a B CinemaScore. In the ninth Conjuring movie, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to the big screen as Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators attempting to expel a monster from a family's house. The film "Last Rites" also gave Warner Bros. Pictures another first weekend box-office win, the seventh consecutive domestically successful launch by that studio and the eighth number one premiere of the year by the distributor.
