In the wake of the Pahalgam attack, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty; PM Shehbaz Sharif promises to extend dam projects.
Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, claims that his government decided to expand the water storage capacity while India continued to postpone the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
India placed the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in "abeyance" as part of a slew of retaliatory actions against Pakistan the day after the terror incident in Pahalgam on April 22. Any attempt to reroute or even temporarily stop the flow of water could have catastrophic consequences for Pakistan, as the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers are vital to the country's vast agricultural sector.
The state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reports that during his visit to the National Emergencies Operations Centre on Tuesday, Sharif spoke about the water problem.
According to Sharif, the "enemy" intends to violate the waterways accord. The government has determined that they will construct their water storage facility in order to do this. According to him, the government will use resources like the Diamer Bhasha dam and others to construct a non-controversial water storage capacity.
In the upcoming years, he added, they would increase this capability using their own resources. The National Disaster Management Authority plays a crucial part in this.
