Cricket’s Olympic return in 2028 will follow regional qualifiers, likely excluding Pakistan and New Zealand, with top-ranked teams like India and Australia earning direct spots.
The Pakistani men's cricket team will most probably be missing the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. According to a source who spoke to the Reuters news agency, the International Cricket Council, the sport's highest governing body, has decided to employ the regional qualifying system to choose the teams that will compete in cricket's 128th Olympic appearance. This implies that a team like Pakistan and New Zealand will not even have the privilege of competing.
The men's teams that will automatically qualify and stamp in representing the Americas into the tournaments are the top-ranked men's teams in Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Africa, and the hosts, the United States. As per these ICC rankings, the Oceania and Asia regions are entitled to berths in Australia and India, respectively.
According to a story by The Guardian, the International Olympic Committee supports regional qualification in order to guarantee that all regions of the world are represented at the Games, making it a truly global event. The United States will qualify because they are the host; therefore, the West Indies' chances are likewise slim.
A total of six teams will be selected to take part in the tournament. According to the report, the procedure for the sixth team has not yet been decided, even if qualification for the first five seats has been finalized. The much-anticipated return of cricket to the Olympics at the LA Games will begin on July 12 at the Fairgrounds Stadium in Pomena, which is roughly 50 kilometers from Los Angeles.
