New Zealand ended transgender inclusion in community sports, triggering criticism after Minister Winston Peters declared that biological males shouldn't compete in women’s sports.
The government decided to remove regulations permitting transgender athletes to compete locally, while a senior New Zealand minister said Thursday that biological males have no place in women's sports. International sports leagues are having difficulty regulating transgender participation.
Transgender athletes are now prohibited from participating in women's sports by the English Football Association and the US Olympic Committee. A government organization called Sport NZ created guiding principles for transgender participation in community sport in 2022. New Zealand's top diplomat and senior government minister, Winston Peters, affirmed the repeal of these "woke" rules on Thursday.
According to Peters, biological men have no place in women's sports, and the state has no place in people's beds. This decision has been taken to ensure the safety of girls and women playing games at all levels. New Zealand used to be reputed as the first nation to permit transgender athletes to participate in the competitions.
They gave guidelines on how to offer privacy in bathrooms and use words that are not gender specific. The norms enable transgender people to compete in sports according to their gender, as Radio New Zealand reports.
Benjamin Doyle, a member of the opposition Green Party, claimed that transgender persons were failing because of the government's decision. According to Doyle, everyone should feel secure participating in sports. These regulations, which no one was required to follow and which may have kept our communities safe, have been abandoned.
