Marvel & Disney VFX Crews Sign First Historic Union Contract

VFX artists at Marvel and Disney have voted to approve their first union contract after a protracted battle for improved working conditions.

According to reports, the contract grants employees the kinds of rights, safeguards, and regulations that are frequently provided by a union: rest intervals, minimum salary hikes, overtime compensation, and access to pension plans, to mention a few.

Additionally, Variety stated that the Disney/Marvel deal under the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) includes hikes of 3.5 percent in the second year and 4 percent in the first. Under a different arrangement, the Avatar franchise's visual effects team also made a pact.

In a statement, ATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb congratulated the members of those VFX bargaining units for securing such significant support via fair contract negotiations. The leadership of these people and their perseverance have been an inspiration since the beginning of the process.

Over the past few years, VFX employees at the businesses have chosen to form a union in response to complaints about excessive work hours and extremely strict deadlines. According to Cael Liakos-Gilbert, a VFX data wrangler at Marvel, this is not only a triumph for Marvel/Disney but also a much-needed win for the entire VFX business. They no longer need to wonder or live in a fog of doubt and skepticism since they have demonstrated what is possible with perseverance and effort.
