Arteta Maintains Arsenal Were Superior Despite Semifinal Defeat

After Arsenal's elimination from the Champions League semifinals, Mikel Arteta claimed that the better team lost.

With goals from Fabián Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Inter Milan 2-1 on Tuesday night to finish with a 3-1 aggregate victory and go to the May 31 final in Munich. The Gunners got off to a quick start in the French capital thanks to two excellent stops from Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard within the first ten minutes, made by PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Before Vitinha failed to score a penalty for a handball by Myles Lewis-Skelly in the 69th minute that was granted on VAR review, Donnarumma also produced a fantastic fingertip stop to deny Bukayo Saka. Even though Saka's goal in the 76th minute was a consolation goal, Arsenal lost their second Champions League Final and will now go five straight seasons without winning a title.

Arteta said after the game that, based on his observations, he doesn't believe that any side in the tournament is better than Arsenal, but they are out. He believed that in both games, they deserved much more. However, the competition is about the boxes, and the goalkeepers and attackers are typically found in both boxes.

Arteta said, "I think so, yes," in response to the question of whether that signified the top team had lost the match against PSG. “In particular, over 160 minutes. They have just informed me that, and I am saying it myself."
