South Korea Unites Tech Giants Amid U.S.-China Tech Rivalry

Representatives from key local corporations, including LG, CJ, Hanwha, and POSCO, are meeting to discuss survival plans for South Korea amid the growing struggle between the U.S. and China for technical superiority.

At the 3rd National Briefing on Core Government Tasks held at the Government Complex Sejong on April 7, Minister of Science and ICT Yoo Sang-im declared that the National Strategic Technology Future Dialogue would take place on April 9.

Minister Yoo will use the dialogue as a forum to discuss ways to counter competition for technological supremacy with presidents from top universities like Seoul National University, KAIST, and POSTECH, as well as representatives from major national strategic technology companies like LG, CJ, Hanwha, and POSCO. The ministry intends to use this occasion to identify national priorities, develop talent, secure next-generation development engines, and enhance systems.

In addition to soliciting feedback from enterprises, academic institutions, and civic organizations about the implementation of the AI Basic Law, Minister Yoo also revealed important departmental work objectives for this month. This month, plans will also be developed for the "AI Bio Expansion Strategy" and the "AI+Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Initiative," which aim to increase competitiveness by incorporating AI into sectors like nuclear and biotechnology. By adopting traffic light system to indicate electromagnetic measurement findings from data centers—essential AI infrastructurethe government is also attempting to reduce public fear.

This year will see the establishment of plans to raise the caliber of communication services, including 5G. There are also planned measures to improve public convenience, such as revealing the findings of competitive situation analyses to encourage competition in the telecom sector and testing the X-ray system to identify and stop smishing attacks beforehand.

The government will establish the "Global K-FAST Alliance" to promote Korean content through FAST, an ad-supported free broadcasting channel for Korean TV abroad. This month will also see the announcement of the "Pan-Government Technology Commercialization Vision," aimed at enhancing the commercialization of public R&D by promoting government research institutes as technology commercialization centers and supporting specialized companies.
