Aboitiz Power starts work on a 48MW hybrid BESS at its floating oil-fired plant in Nasipit, boosting grid stability in Mindanao.
In the Philippines, Aboitiz Power was established as an energy-generating and utility company that has commenced construction of a hybrid battery energy storage system (BESS) of 48 MW at a floating oil-fired power plant station in Agusan Del Norte, through its subsidiary Therma Marine Inc. (TMI).
TMI Mobile 2, a form of floating power barge in Nasipit Bay, will be grafted into the 48-MW Nasipit hybrid BESS by its oil-fired power complex, which has been constructed by Aboitiz Power. As per Aboitiz Power, it will be a part of an integrated BESS facility for supplying quick, responsive power as an ancillary service to assist in grid supply balancing between demand and supply.
Constructed in 1994, the floating power complex offers flexible, on-demand power. A 49MW hybrid BESS can also be found at its older sibling, the TMI Mobile 1 oil-fired power station in Maco, Davao de Oro, which was constructed in 1993 and went into commercial operation in 2022.
A clean energy joint venture, SN Aboitiz Power, was formed by the Norwegian renewable energy systems developer Scatec and the holding company Aboitiz Power, which generates, sells, and distributes power.
In March 2025, Energy-Storage News stated Government's Department of Energy (DOE) initiated first steps of an auction program for energy storage and renewable energy.
