Oscar-Winning Palestinian Filmmaker Detained by Israeli Soldiers

Co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, Hamdan Ballal, is taken into custody after Israeli settlers attack him in the occupied West Bank.

Following a wave of violence between Israeli settlers and Palestinians, campaigners claim that a Palestinian Oscar winner has been arrested in the occupied West Bank. The Center for Jewish Nonviolence organization said that during an attack on Monday in the town of Susya, settlers encircled the home of Hamdan Ballal, one of the four co-directors of No Other Land.

Israel has denied that Mr. Ballal was assaulted and transported by troops in an ambulance, according to co-director Yuval Abraham. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated three Palestinians and one Israeli were arrested on suspicion of "rock hurling" against security officers, although they did not name Mr. Ballal.

The group's five Jewish American activists said that at around 18:00 (16:00 GMT), a dozen masked settlers attacked Susya.

The activists said that after visiting the village to record the event, they were attacked by settlers who smashed the windows of their cars and struck them with sticks and punches.

The settlers are said to have encircled Mr. Ballal's home.

The Israeli filmmaker Yuval Abraham, who shared the Oscar with Mr. Ballal last month, reported that the attack had caused property damage and injuries.

According to one activist who spoke to the BBC, they had informed the Israeli forces that they were being attacked. They claimed that the settlers had retreated once the army stepped in.

The arrival of Israeli police and IDF soldiers to break up the altercation was verified by Israel's army.

They said that security personnel had been "hurled" rocks. In response, the forces detained one Israeli citizen involved in the violent altercation and three Palestinians accused of throwing rocks at them, according to the IDF. The Israel Police took the inmates away for additional interrogation. After being hurt in the event, an Israeli national was taken to an evacuation center for medical care.
