Thanks to goals from substitute Harvey Elliott and star Mohamed Salah, Liverpool defeated 10-man Lille 2-1 on Tuesday at Anfield, securing their place in the Champions League's round of 16.
With one game left in the league round, Liverpool maintained their perfect record and leads the 36-team board with 21 points, three points ahead of Barcelona. Lille has 13 points and is in 11th place. After Kostas Tsimikas regained the ball inside the Reds' half, Salah ran onto a long pass from Curtis Jones and curled a shot around goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier to score Liverpool's 50th European goal in the 34th minute.
Aissa Mandi's second yellow card for his challenge on Luis Diaz in the 59th minute reduced the team to 10 men, but three minutes later Jonathan David gave the visitors the equalizer after Hakon Arnar Haraldsson's attempt was blocked. David's goal was his sixth in the league stage of the competition this year, and it was just the second goal Liverpool had let up, the first having occurred in their first match against AC Milan. All the players were perfectly healthy.
Just before extra time, Darwin Nunez celebrated what he believed to be Liverpool's third goal, but it was called offside. In recognition of Nunez's effort, the Anfield fans screamed his name, with absolute entertainment.
On January 29, Lille will host Feyenoord, while Liverpool will travel to PSV Eindhoven for their league phase finale.
