Paris-based firm Urban Sales has bought international rights to the animated movie Space Cadet, which will debut at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) next month.

Published in 2011, Space Cadet is a graphic novel written by Canadian DJ and visual artist Eric San aka Kid Koala. Urban Sales acquired worldwide rights to this feature. Mylène Chollet wrote the screenplay for Space Cadet, which was produced by Ginette Petit of ‘Outsiders’. Les Films Opale will handle the film's distribution in Canada.

The touching CG tale follows Celeste, a brilliant young cosmonaut embarking on her first solo space trip, while her robot bodyguard struggles to figure out what to do without his lifelong charge to care for. Berlinale characterizes this narrative without dialogue as "A tomorrow-days lullaby about finding your place in the universe."

Other than Space Cadet, San wrote the visual book Nutonia Must Fall, which was accompanied with music CDs by the artist. As a DJ, San has performed with Radiohead and the Beastie Boys, cooperated with the virtual band, Gorillaz and recorded five solo albums. He is also a film composer, having contributed to the soundtracks of The Great Gatsby, Baby Driver, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

The music for Space Cadet was recorded in Montreal throughout the winter using a piano, bass, viola, and many turntables. It is a compilation of traditionally based quiet-time pieces, ideal for lulling your infant to sleep.
