Global Fund Launches $50M Env. & Health Fund

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria has collaborated with Foundation S and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It has declared the opening of a $50 million fund devoted to health and climate-related challenges.

The Climate and Health Catalytic Fund was established with a $40 million match agreement from Gates and a $10 million donation from Sanofi to help nations and vulnerable communities address the health effects of climate change and develop low-carbon, climate-resilient health systems. To help high-risk nations step up their climate and health responses, the fund seeks to employ charitable funds to help provide a targeted flow of funding.

The fact that infectious diseases and climate change are disproportionately affecting the poorest and most marginalized communities are underscored by the statement made by Peter Sands, executive director of the Global Fund, that already 71% of the Global Fund's investments, including more than 80% of our malaria funding, are being deployed in the 50 most climate-vulnerable countries. They praise the Gates Foundation and Foundation S—The Sanofi Collective—for taking the lead in establishing this innovative catalytic fund to assist nations in addressing specific crises and bolstering the resilience of their health systems to help them adapt to the pressing and expanding health-related issues brought on by climate change.

The fund will help health ministries, communities, and other national stakeholders in developing and implementing locally driven and country-owned climate solutions, with a focus on the most climate-vulnerable countries.
