Chinese Animation Dominated by Top IPs NeZha & Boonie Bear

This Spring Festival, four further locally made flicks will contend alongside two Chinese animated features with top intellectual property, "NeZha" and "Boonie Bears," in Chinese theaters.

According to Chinese booking site Maoyan, the two films' pre-sales have brought in 68.21 million Yuan ($8.9 million) and 14.9 million Yuan, respectively, as of the time of publication. The sequel, NeZha 2, is the highest-grossing animated film in China and stars a well-known character from Chinese mythology. NeZha 1 was released in 2019 and received both commercial acclaim, collecting over 5 billion Yuan at the box office.

Another animation IP in the Spring Festival canon that is not to be overlooked is Boonie Bears: Future Reborn, which is a family movie continuation that blends comedy and science fiction, collecting 1 billion Yuan in 2022, while Bonnie Bears: Time Twist, released in 2024, made nearly 2 billion Yuan.

According to Shang Linlin, principal producer of the Boonie Bears series, children's imaginations can be stimulated by the wisdom fabrication components, as reported by the Global Times.

But now that they've reached the fifth part, it really does feel like it's time to end the series.
