Amazon has made the biggest purchase of electric heavy goods vehicles, acquiring more than 200 eActros600 trucks from Mercedes-Benz. These cars will join Amazon's current armada later this year as part of the company's climate pledge.
This supports Amazon's Climate Pledge to reach zero carbon emissions by 2040. It concentrates on improving route efficiency, increasing zero-emission transportation, and collaborating with partners to extend charging infrastructure.
The eActros600 trucks will run on Amazon's high-mileage middle-mile network in the United Kingdom and Germany, moving trailers between fulfillment centers, sort centers, and delivery stations. Together, these trucks are scheduled to handle over 350 million parcels each year.
Charging infrastructure for heavy vehicles remains a challenge owing to the distances trucks travel, charging speed, and power availability at crucial points. To solve this, Amazon will deploy 360kW chargers in strategic areas, allowing 20%-80% charging in just over an hour. Partnerships with stakeholders will aid in the installment of external charging outlets for longer travels.
This investment represents a big step toward decarbonizing Amazon's transportation operations and establishing an example for the supply chain sector.
