Despite LeBron James' triple-double effort, the Pistons end a road losing skid with a close victory over the Lakers, led by Malik Beasley and Cade Cunningham.
The Detroit Pistons completed a season sweep of the legendary team on Monday night, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 117-114. In order to guarantee Detroit's first back-to-back victories since mid-November, Malik Beasley scored 21 points, and Cade Cunningham contributed 20 points and 10 assists.
LeBron James recorded his 120th career triple-double with a fantastic effort that included 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists. But right before the buzzer, the 39-year-old missed a 3-pointer that might have tied the game. With eight triple-doubles to Jokic's eleven this season, James is just behind Jokic.
The Pistons have already upset elite clubs like Phoenix and Los Angeles this month thanks to 18 points from Jaden Ivey. Detroit put on a strong performance on the big stage in Los Angeles, ending a seven-game road losing run against the Lakers that dated back to 2017.
With a little over two minutes left, the Pistons had a 117-106 lead, but the Lakers rallied with an eight-point run that culminated in James' game-winning layup with 46 seconds remaining. Cunningham missed a late 3-pointer, and a foul call against Detroit with 28.9 seconds left was reversed by a video review. Then, to force OT, James missed a wide-open 30-footer.
The Lakers had 19 points and 10 rebounds from Anthony Davis, but the Pistons took advantage of the team's 20 mistakes and defensive errors. Ivey and Beasley led Detroit to a crucial 16–4 fourth-quarter surge.
LeBron also made history during the game, passing Derek Fisher for the second-most 3-pointers in Lakers history with his 847th 3-pointer. With 1,827, only Kobe Bryant has more.
On Christmas, the Lakers will play the Golden State Warriors, and on Thursday, the Pistons will travel to Sacramento.
