Macquarie bid, Axiata telecom infrastructure

Edotco Group may be worth around US$3.5 billion as a result of the possible sale.

According to persons with knowledge of the situation, Macquarie Asset Management Pty Ltd has put in a proposal to purchase the telecom infrastructure division of Axiata Group Bhd, with a potential purchase price of US$3.5 billion (RM15.6 billion).

According to insiders who asked not to be named since the process is confidential, Axiata is still considering the bid for Edotco Group Sdn Bhd and has not made a decision. According to the insiders, discussions are still going on and could not result in a contract. They also mentioned that Edotco might attract other bids. Axiata and Macquarie representatives chose not to comment. Approximately 63% of edotco is owned by Axiata, the largest cellular company in Malaysia.

In October, Innovation Network Corp. of Japan (INCJ) revived the sale of its 21% ownership in edotco, which was followed by Macquarie's proposal. When INCJ's operating mandate expires at the end of March, it must offload its holdings. Eight years ago, it spent US$400 million on the telecom infrastructure company located in Kuala Lumpur.

According to its website, edotco was established in 2012 and currently oversees more than 55,000 telecom towers around Asia, including those in Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, and the Philippines. In April, it reached an agreement to sell its 87.5% share in edotco interests Singapore Pte Ltd, a special purpose company for its Myanmar interests, for around $150 million USD.

Other notable Macquarie deals include the August announcement of a US$663 million purchase of Seoul's Hanam Data Centre and the US$16.1 billion sale of Australian data center operator AirTrunk the following month.
