A UK lawsuit against Apple for cloud storage ‘monopoly’ is worth around $3.66 billion

Due to allegations that it violated competition law by essentially tying millions of UK users into its cloud storage service at "rip-off" charges, Apple lawsuit worth close to $3.66 billion. Which party is bringing the legal claim? According to the consumer organization, if the  lawsuit is successful, over 40 million Apple users in the UK might be eligible for a refund of $85.40 apiece. Apple, however, stated that it would "vigorously defend" itself against any legal claim and denied the which? accusations.

Apple was the target of a similar case in the US in March of this year, although it hasn't been resolved yet. Which? advises a global legal firm that the class action encompasses all UK customers who have paid Apple cloud fees after October 1, 2015.

Every Apple iPhone comes with iCloud, the US tech giant's cloud storage service that enables users to safely store files, images, and other material online so they are backed up and accessible when required.

Users are given 5GB of storage for free, but they have to pay for more; different plans range in price from 99p to $67.14 each month. Millions of individuals were impacted by the 29% increase in plan pricing last year, which some media sites referred to as a "shock price hike."

The competition appeal tribunal, a specialized UK court that renders decisions in situations concerning competition or economic regulation, received the which? legal claim. By "giving its iCloud storage service preferential treatment, 'trapping' customers with Apple devices into using iCloud," the complaint claimed that Apple antitrust had violated UK competition law.

It claimed that Apple's iOS mobile operating system had a "monopoly" and that it is Apple's responsibility to avoid abusing its position of dominance to obtain an unfair edge in similar sectors, such as the cloud storage industry. The competition appeals tribunal received a legal claim.
