President-elect Donald Trump is thinking about changing the FBI's leadership in order to make a significant overhaul.
According to reports, Trump has been preparing for months to dismiss FBI Director Christopher Wray should he take office again. He is having trouble choosing a replacement, though, which shares his objectives and can be approved by the Senate.
There was further pressure to select a more suitable candidate for the FBI job after Trump's first pick for attorney general, Matt Gaetz, resigned after encountering strong Senate opposition. The appointment of Mike Rogers, a former FBI agent and former congressman from Michigan, as FBI Director is one possible strategy. Rogers may be viewed by Senate Republicans as a more moderate choice, having just lost a Senate election. Meanwhile, Trump is thinking about appointing Kash Patel, a strong MAGA fan, as the deputy director of the FBI.
This combination may allay the worries of MAGA supporters, who look for comrades in important positions, and Senate Republicans, who desire stability at the FBI. Although nothing is official until Trump makes the announcement himself, most likely on Truth Social, sources indicate that this proposal is being given careful thought.
Reactions to the possible nominations are not entirely uniform among experts. Former FBI Deputy Director and CNN commentator Andrew McCabe said Rogers' background in intelligence and law enforcement would make him a natural option. Nonetheless, McCabe vehemently opposed Patel's appointment to a senior position, contending that an individual lacking FBI expertise may undermine the agency's objectives.
According to reports, Trump has been interviewing people at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. A number of names have apparently been examined, rejected, and then brought up again. Trump frequently solicits advice from friends and advisors while making decisions, but the ultimate choice is still up in the air.
