A letter from the White House argues that while preserving individual freedoms and privacy, the US should remain at the forefront of AI development.
President Joe Biden of the United States has revealed new goals to apply artificial intelligence (AI) for national security as the global competition to develop AI intensifies.
In his first-ever National Security Memorandum (NSM) on AI, which was made public on Thursday, Biden outlined the strategy and called on the government to keep setting the standard for developing “safe, secure, and trustworthy” AI.
The letter gives US agencies instructions to improve their semiconductor chip supply chains, include AI concerns into new government technology, and prioritize gathering intelligence on foreign efforts to subvert US leadership in AI.
They believe they must outperform their competitors and reduce the dangers involved with their usage of AI race US, according to a Biden administration official cited by AFP.
The White House memo stressed that the government must employ AI to protect human rights and democratic values. The statement continued by saying that Americans must know when to trust systems to operate safely and consistently.
As part of safeguarding measures, it requires US authorities to monitor, assess, and mitigate AI risks related to privacy infringement, bias and discrimination, individual and group safety, and other human rights abuses.
The directive also asks for a framework for Washington to engage with partners to ensure Global AI leadership is developed and used in ways that uphold human rights and basic freedoms while adhering to international law.
The memo is the latest effort by Biden's administration to address the quickly developing technologies that US officials believe might result in intense rivalry between superpowers in terms of intelligence and military capabilities.
