Hankook has achieved the highest level of environmental and sustainability certification—three stars—in the Environmental Accreditation Program of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).
A certification scheme called FIA Environmental Accreditation was created to support Hankook sustainability and environmental management in the automotive industry. It assesses variables like energy efficiency, waste management optimization, logistics performance, environmental performance, and the execution of carbon neutrality initiatives.
Hankook Tire, the only tire supplier and partner of the FIA Formula E World Championship, received recognition for its proactive approach to sustainability, specifically in relation to climate change initiatives.
The company has dedicated its assets to sustainability in order to provide tires for Formula E. This has resulted in the tire manufacturing process becoming a circular loop, starting from the procurement of raw materials and ending with post-use recycling. It not only meets the new carbon footprint tracking requirements, but it also conducts Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) at all stages, from obtaining initial supplies to manufacturing, shipping, and recycling.
In the meantime, Hankook Tire keeps up its relentless efforts to improve sustainability in the tire sector worldwide. Its tire factory in Geumsan, Korea, was one of the initial in the tire sector to receive ISCC PLUS accreditation in 2021. In October 2023, its facility in Hungary received the same certification. Furthermore, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) certified Hankook Tire's mid- to long-term reduction of greenhouse gases goals in August 2023, making it the first tire industry news in Korea to achieve "Net Zero by 2050." This indicates the company's dedication to putting into practice concrete steps meant to lower carbon emissions.
