Hill Republicans claim that Beijing's military is now strengthened by the historic 1979 agreement.
A 44-year-old technological and scientific deal that House Republicans argue should be permanently terminated because it supports China's military growth and jeopardizes American security is being discreetly renewed by the Biden administration and China's government.
The U.S.-China tech agreement, which was considered a significant turning point in bilateral ties in 1979, ended on August 27 following a six-month extension. The two governments are currently attempting to reach an agreement over a renewal.
According to a State Department official this week, the Biden administration is still working to make the agreement stronger in order to further and safeguard American interests in the fields of science and technology. Using the abbreviation for the People's Republic of China, the United States and the PRC are still having fruitful discussions over the Technology and Science Agreement.
The official refused to comment on whether the deal had expired or had been surreptitiously renewed, as had happened during a previous extension.
Liu Pengyu, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Embassy, stated that both countries are still in contact over the renew U.S.-China tech agreement.
At a period when China trailed behind the rest of the globe in science and technology, the Carter administration formally recognized China's communist leadership in Beijing in 1979. This led to the first bilateral agreement, the Science and Technology Agreement. Nearly automatically, the agreement was extended every five years, and many university research institutes and scientists saw benefits in working with their Chinese colleagues.
However, the renewal deal was only good for six months last year due to mounting tensions on several fronts, and it ended on August 27 without a further extension.
