fate of Red Hat Amphitheater uncertain

The Raleigh Convention Center's proposed expansion will shorten Red Hat Amphitheater's current lease; hence, plans to rebuild the amphitheater one block south may also be in peril.

Due to conflicting opinions on the proposed closure of a portion of South Street, some business owners fear the project may not be able to proceed as planned. Talking about the risk assessment, the Downtown Raleigh Alliance's CEO, Bill King, informed reporters that the street closure poses a "serious" risk to Red Hat growth in the future.

During the summer, Red Hat Amphitheater is one of downtown Raleigh's main sources of revenue; local businesses rely on it to stay in business. According to the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, the amphitheater saw 51 performances and an ice rink in the previous year, drawing over 200,000 people to downtown Raleigh. Therefore, the authorities need to take the economic impact into account as well.

According to an ABC11 story, the Raleigh Convention Center announced in June that it would have to close South Street, which runs between McDowell and Dawson streets. According to ABC11, the convention center stated that this was required to maintain Red Hat's capacity of over 6,500 attendees, a level that it claims is required to draw performances.

The existing amphitheater was intended to be a temporary fix on property that could be utilized to extend the convention center when it opened in 2010. However, in the last fourteen years, it has grown to be one of the most cherished aspects of the city, compelling local authorities to preserve it. Red Hat's current objective is to remain operational for one more season and open in its new location by 2026.
