Google and SRP collaborate on a clean energy agreement

Google and SRP have signed an eight-year agreement for renewable energy power for their $600 million Mesa data center, covering three NextEra Energy-run plants.

Google started construction on a $600 million data center in Mesa last year. The firm and SRP have now struck an eight-year agreement for the facility's renewable energy power. The three NextEra Energy-run plants that supply SRP's system with electricity from solar and wind power are all covered by the deal.

The deal includes a wind farm that is being built in Coconino County and solar plants that opened in Buckeye and Coolidge last year. The head of resource planning at SRP, Grant Smedley, reported that the company is currently witnessing notable spikes in electricity consumption. Because this is one of the fastest expanding regions in the nation, both the peak demand for power and the annual demand from their consumers are rising significantly.

Additionally, he claims that working with Google will continue to facilitate the utility's switch to clean energy. They are very excited to be on this journey with them, stressing that they are really going to help them expedite their transition to carbon-free power generation resources while also working to keep those costs of doing so affordably for all of their consumers. According to Google, the Mesa data center is scheduled to start up sometime in 2025.
