Washington, D.C., a tech talent hub, has seen a 7% increase in tech occupations since 2017, accounting for 8.8% of overall employment, despite financial challenges.
Washington, D.C., is a strong tech talent hub, ranking No. 4 in CBRE's 2023 Scoring Tech Talent report. The region has seen a 7% increase in tech occupations since 2017, accounting for 8.8% of overall employment. However, access to these well-paying IT jobs is often limited for disadvantaged areas due to lack of access to high-quality education, ignorance of tech opportunities, and high technical training costs.
Deloitte has a long-standing partnership with Year Up, a nonprofit organization that helps recent high school graduates transition from education to the workforce. Since 2015, Deloitte has hosted 18 Year Up program participants in its Information Technology Services (ITS) business, with 70% of them starting full-time employment. These specialists are well-retained, with 70% still employed after three years.
In an effort to have a significant influence and build a more just community, Deloitte is also working with the Greater Washington Partnership and a number of other employers in the area to address issues ranging from sustainability and climate change to workforce development and education.
Furthermore, 175 scholarships for diverse students who are underrepresented in the tech industry and who want to study information technology, computer science, data analytics, or machine learning at GWP-selected universities in the mid-Atlantic are being funded by the Deloitte Foundation. The Deloitte Foundation's backing of programs like STEM for Her and Byte Back is another example of their dedication to equity.
