On Saturday, February 17, 2024, the 37th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government convened. African heads of state and government as well as high-ranking representatives from throughout the continent of Africa attended the event, which was held at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the theme "Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa." During the ceremony, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, the president of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, was elected as the Union's chairperson until 2024. He succeeded outgoing chairperson Azali Assoumani, the president of the Union of Comoros.
Among the notable speakers at the official opening ceremony were Moussa Faki Mahamat, the AU Commission Chairperson; Dr. Abiy Ahmed, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia's Prime Minister; Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil; Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary General of the League of Arab States; Palestine's Prime Minister, Mohammad Shyyyeh; and the Union of Comoros's President, Azali Assoumani, the outgoing Chairperson of the Union. In remembrance of the late Namibian President Hage Geingob, the Assembly began with a moment of silence. Assoumani, the outgoing Chair of the Union, took the floor to provide a thorough report on the accomplishments and initiatives carried out on behalf of the AU during his tenure.
