Meta launches AI Academy Nigeria, giving local AI startups a chance to win funding, gain global exposure, and take their ideas to the world. But who will emerge as Nigeria’s next big AI success story?
Meta launches AI Academy Nigeria with a new program that combines AI training, startup funding and global exposure, giving Nigerian innovators a chance to take their ideas far beyond the local market.
Nigeria’s AI ecosystem is getting a major support as Meta, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT), the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN), launches a nationwide initiative for AI talent and startups.
A launchpad for Nigeria’s Future AI companies
AI Academy Nigeria is focused on three things that are helping people learn AI skills a Startup Pitchathon and a six-week Developer Bootcamp. The main goal of AI Academy Nigeria is to help people go from learning about AI to actually building AI products that can solve real problems that people face. AI Academy Nigeria wants to make sure people can use Artificial Intelligence to make a difference.
For startups, the Pitchathon could be the biggest opportunity. Applications close on August 21, 2026, after which 10 startups will be selected to pitch live at GITEX Nigeria on September 3. Two winners will each receive $5,000 in cash funding, $2,000 in Meta advertising credits and an “all expenses paid” opportunity to represent Nigeria at the AI Summit by Meta in Istanbul on November 23 and 24.
More than a Chance to Win
The program is not limited to founders. Members of the 3MTT community can access free AI courses through Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp. The curriculum covers generative AI, prompt engineering, multimodal AI, data analytics and building applications with Meta’s Llama models.
The top 100 performers will also be eligible for scholarships toward paid Meta Blueprint certifications and up to $5,000 in advertising credits. A selected group of developers and startups will take part in RAIN’s intensive six-week bootcamp, receiving technical guidance and access to Meta’s AI expert network while developing functional, market-ready products.
Dr ‘Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, said, “Through this partnership, we are equipping developers, entrepreneurs, and young professionals with practical AI skills while creating pathways for innovation and globally competitive startups.”
Could this change Nigeria’s AI ambitions?
Meta’s Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa, Sade Dada, said Nigeria has some of Africa’s most dynamic AI talent but founders need greater access to practical training, funding and platforms. That combination could prove important as Nigerian startups compete for attention in a rapidly expanding global AI market. More importantly, the program connects local talent with regional and international opportunities instead of keeping innovation within Nigeria’s borders.
According to Business Fortune, if the academy keeps its promise its effect might go beyond the 2026 competition. Skilled developers, better startups and easier access to global markets could help Nigeria create a stronger AI economy and position itself as one of Africa’s top places, for AI development.
