One of the fastest-growing sports in the world today, Padel, a dynamic blend of tennis and squash played on an enclosed court, has evolved into a global social and lifestyle movement. At the forefront of this transformation is Juan Pablo Leria Valero, a visionary entrepreneur, businessman, and investor who has spent more than two decades developing innovative wellness and sports platforms that combine fitness, community, and design into scalable lifestyle destinations.

“We aren’t just trying to build a sports club,” Juan Pablo explains. “What we are doing is creating an environment where people become healthier, happier, and more connected. For me, success is walking into a club filled with people who are transforming their lives, building relationships, and making wellness part of their daily routine, and knowing those communities will live on for decades.”

The wellness sector was substantially different from what it is today when Juan Pablo opened his first upscale wellness club in Santiago in 2001. Few operators saw the potential of wellness, and community was not a key component of health; fitness centers were mostly functional rather than experiential, and spa services were viewed as stand-alone therapies rather than as part of a lifestyle ecosystem. Early on, Juan Pablo saw that wellness would go beyond personal routines into organized, social spaces that people would come to for daily integration, connection, and advice in addition to exercise, what he would later refer to as a real "third space."

“Twenty-five years ago, wellness was largely individual and lacked dedicated social spaces,” Juan Pablo says. We saw the opportunity to create a premium experience where people practiced wellness under expert guidance in beautiful settings and stayed for the community and connection.”

This realization inspired him to create Balthus, a pioneering wellness-hospitality platform in Latin America that combines member-centered programming, architecture-led design, elite coaching, and restorative services within a single destination.

The initiative swiftly proved that wellness could serve as both a scalable lifestyle business model and a high-retention community platform. Juan Pablo´s early belief that hospitality-driven wellness would determine the sector's future orientation was confirmed when Technogym named the flagship club the "Best Wellness Club in the World" in 2002, thereby gaining worldwide recognition.

Juan Pablo recalls the moment the vision crystallized: “Wellness was still largely self-taught — something people explored it on their own… The missing element was hospitality. That convergence — wellness hospitality — became the thread that defined my journey.”

He didn’t stop there. Juan Pablo and his partners invested about $25 million to create Youtopia Company - a next-generation wellness hospitality holding, building on the success of his early wellness-club endeavors. He proposed a strategy that integrated therapeutic services, studios, spa settings, hospitality areas, and digital member interaction technologies into a unified ecosystem designed for everyday usage rather than infrequent visits across two flagship clubs in Santiago totaling around 140,000 square feet.

The result was a structured lifestyle platform where wellness became part of members’ routines rather than a separate activity.

Javier Khamis is a Board Member at Youtopia, a leading Chile-based premium wellness hospitality platform, where he oversees strategic development and expansion. He worked directly with Juan Pablo during his time as Founder and CEO, gaining deep insight into his ability to build and grow one of the most forward-thinking wellness ecosystems in the region.

“Having worked side by side with Juan as Founder and CEO of Youtopia, I can confidently attest to his exceptional vision and leadership,” Javier says.

“He played a central role in creating and developing Youtopia as a leading wellness hospitality concept, successfully growing into a scalable business.”

As the platform expanded, more than 5,000 active members and 10,000 digital subscribers incorporated Youtopia into their routines through a subscription-based model supported by both physical clubs and a digital experience that extended engagement beyond the facility itself.

Bill Ullman is the President of the United States Padel Association (USPA), the national governing body for padel in the United States, which is recognized by the International Padel Federation (FIP).

In his role, he has worked closely with Juan through USPA-sanctioned competitions, junior development programs, and the broader expansion of padel infrastructure in the U.S.

“As President of the USPA, I’ve had direct insight into Juan Pablo’s outstanding work and dedication to advancing padel in the United States. He has distinguished himself as a top executive in the industry — as Founder and CEO of Padel X, one of the nation’s leading padel club operators — and as the driving force alongside his partner Nalle Grinda behind important initiatives like the USPA Elite Junior Academy at Padel X Miami,” Bill explains.

“Juan Pablo has also been instrumental in leading premier events, including the Padel X Open – USPA 2000, the biggest padel tournament in the country, and the FIP Promises Miami, a prestigious international junior competition. He continues to be a vital leader in the ongoing growth of the sport in the United States.”

Along with generating about $10 million in annual sales, the concept also demonstrated strong commercial performance, supporting Juan’s strategy of fusing architecture-led environments, community-building systems, and hospitality standards into scalable wellness destinations with quantifiable retention and social impact.

"I love the creative entrepreneurial side of turning visions into reality—launching Padel X in the US from a blank canvas, applying my design, business, and sports expertise to create something entirely new and elevated," Juan Pablo explains.

"Having lived in multiple countries and studied both economics and architecture, I bring a rare blend of skills to every project. This allows me to handle everything from site selection and construction to brand-building and community development when launching or scaling a new venture".

Juan saw that the sector needed to move to a high-level operational discipline to expand successfully in the American market. He concluded that a more sophisticated approach to real estate and site selection was required due to the substantial capital requirements in the United States, where a single club's typical investment is around $4 million. He turned potential market challenges into a tactical advantage by focusing on South Florida's large Latin population and its established racket-sport culture.

“Expanding Padel clubs into the United States has been a challenge that ultimately helped me grow,” Juan Pablo explains.

“The capital requirements here are significantly higher, and securing prime real estate was far more complex than in other countries. Overcoming these hurdles strengthened my real-estate negotiation, deal-structuring, and market-entry skills while proving the viability of our premium, scalable model.”

Central to this evolution of the padel industry is Padel X´s proprietary underwriting methodology, a data-driven system that has effectively replaced "gut-feeling" expansion with rigorous financial modeling.

This model meticulously evaluates demographic scoring, construction costs, and lease structures to generate various sensitivity scenarios for every potential location. Juan Pablo’s approach not only enabled rapid scaling to four locations but also established a blueprint for future growth through international partnerships and franchising.

“We replaced intuitive, ‘mom-and-pop’ decision-making with our own system—the first of its kind in the U.S. Padel industry,” Juan Pablo explains.

“The model evaluates demographic scoring, real-estate inputs, and operational forecasts to generate sensitivity scenarios that guide intelligent site selection and investment decisions.”

The impact of Juan Pablo’s work has resonated far beyond Florida, attracting international operators who view his model as the definitive blueprint for scaling racket-sport platforms in complex, high-cost environments.

He says: “This methodical approach allowed us to scale Padel X from a single signed lease to four operating clubs generating multi-million dollar revenue in just two years, proving that a data-driven system can reduce risk and drive excellence even in the most competitive markets.”

Juan Pablo adds: “Our initiatives go beyond storytelling; they are ‘story doing’—tangible actions in the circular economy and premium hospitality experience that have positioned Padel X as a benchmark in the industry.”

Referring to his ‘story doing’approach—tangible actions in the circular economy and premium hospitality experience, Juan Pablo believes it has positioned Padel X as a benchmark in the industry.”

He is also integrating environmental responsibility into the brand experience. Juan has made sure that Padel X leads the industry in sustainability, going beyond operational data. 30,000 plastic bottles have already been successfully recycled through the company's circular-economy initiative, which turned them into clothing and court equipment. By combining social impact with first-rate hospitality, the brand is certain to appeal to a contemporary, ethical membership base.

“My 360-degree expertise across hospitality, design, real estate, team-building, and operations gives me a complete view that most single-discipline operators lack,” Juan Pablo says.

“It allows me to handle everything from site selection and construction to brand-building and community development when launching or scaling a new venture.”

Juan Pablo has long-standing affiliations with the most influential organizations in the global health and sports sectors. As an Ambassador for the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), he is part of a global movement dedicated to empowering wellness and preventative health worldwide.

He is also a member of the International Health & Racquet Sports Association (IHRSA), and the United States Padel Association (USPA).

Felipe Calderon is a Board Member at Padel X, where he has been closely involved in overseeing the company’s strategic growth and development as a leading premium padel and lifestyle platform in the United States.

He has worked alongside Juan Pablo since the company’s early stages, observing his leadership in scaling operations and shaping the brand’s vision.

“Having worked closely with Juan Pablo while he served as Founder and CEO of Padel X, I can confidently attest to his exceptional leadership and vision,” says Felipe.

“He played a pivotal role in transforming Padel X from its beginnings into one of the leading padel club platforms in the United States, overseeing significant capital investments, multi-site expansion, and the creation of a premium hospitality-focused experience for the sport.”

Juan Pablo has directed over $116 million in total capital throughout a career spanning more than 25 years and three continents, continuously demonstrating that wellness hospitality is a potent engine for both financial performance and social cohesiveness. From his early success with Balthus, which Technogym voted the "Best Wellness Club in the World," to the creation of more than 1,000 luxury units at Alcazaba Resorts, he has consistently paid close attention to detail. “My ‘why’ remains simple yet powerful: creating environments where people become healthier, happier, and more connected,” Juan Pablo reflects.

“Success isn't just about the physical build-out; it is about building a culture where teams thrive and seeing former staff rise into leadership roles 20 years later. Whether through our internship programs or our daily operations, I measure my legacy by the strength of the communities and the professional growth of the people I work with, and the communities we work for.”
