The move strengthens Airbus’s cybersecurity footprint, boosting sovereign capabilities across Europe and allied nations pending 2026 approval.
The Cobham Ultra Group, an Advent International portfolio business, and Airbus have reached a final agreement for the acquisition of Ultra Cyber Ltd. This strategic action increases Airbus's presence in the European cybersecurity market and solidifies its standing as a reliable sovereign partner for the UK and its allies. The acquisition strengthens Airbus's current sovereign cyber capabilities in Newport, Wales, and expands its end-to-end cyber portfolio.
With over 200 employees mostly located in its advanced cyber center in Maidenhead, Ultra Cyber Ltd. will strengthen Airbus' dedication to the UK as a key home market. The integration will provide a scalable UK sovereign cyber capacity by increasing cyber activities within Airbus Defence and Space's Connected Intelligence branch. Airbus's plan to become a major multi sovereign cybersecurity actor in Europe and support a larger European digital shield is centered on this investment. It guarantees that nations in Europe, as well as the Five Eyes and NATO allies, have access to reliable, government-approved cyber technologies.
The action comes after Airbus strengthened its cybersecurity capabilities in Germany and the EU by acquiring Infodas in 2024. The UK, France, Germany, Spain and Finland are all part of the pan European cyber network that Airbus now runs. The agreement includes specialized airborne datalink capabilities, which will improve Airbus's capacity to protect sensitive data in both airborne and ground based military settings.
Airbus Defence and Space CEO Mike Schoellhorn emphasized the company's long term ties to the UK and its partnership with the Ministry of Defence. Juliette Wilcox highlighted the potential for innovation and expanded delivery of advanced cyber solutions, while Shonnel Malani highlighted the significance of Ultra Cyber's efforts under geopolitical turmoil. The agreement is expected to close in the second half of 2026, pending regulatory approval.
Thus, Business Fortune is of the view that this acquisition positions Airbus to play a decisive role in shaping Europe’s sovereign cybersecurity landscape while reinforcing strategic defense alliances.
