With Toyota Tsusho's ownership of its Gumi cathode factory, LG Chem improves community development in Vizag while restructuring its worldwide supply chain to comply with U.S. IRA regulations.

With the establishment of the LG India CSR Foundation in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, on Thursday, LG Polymers, the Indian manufacturing division of LG Chem, made a major advancement in its dedication to social responsibility and sustainable community development.

Consul General Chang-Nyun Kim of the Korean Consulate in Chennai, Indian Member of Parliament Sribharat, Andhra Pradesh MLA Ganababu, Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Shankar Bhagchi, and LG Chem's Chief Sustainability Strategy Officer Yunju Ko attended the inauguration ceremony.

With an importance on improving living circumstances, healthcare, and vocational skills in the towns surrounding the company's factory, the recently formed foundation will lead a variety of community-oriented initiatives.

Among the initiatives are medical services that have already benefited over 6,500 locals, vocational training in areas like tailoring and beauty care, and a newly opened drinking water facility for nearby communities. These programs will be centered at the foundation headquarters, which has classrooms for cultural and educational events.

Sang-Woo Lim, the Deputy Chief of Mission, highlighted that LG Chem's CSR initiatives are in line with Korea's goals for its collaboration with India, which include promoting community development, increasing industrial cooperation, and fortifying interpersonal relationships. As an example of inclusive growth, he wished the foundation luck. In order to comply with U.S. IRA regulations, LG Chem is also growing its alliances abroad. According to Pulse, it just added Toyota Tsusho of Japan as the second-largest stakeholder of its Gumi cathode factory.

A quarter of LG-HY BCM, a cathode joint venture in Gumi, South Korea, has been purchased by Toyota Tsusho. After the transaction, Huayou Cobalt owns 24%, Toyota Tsusho 25%, and LG Chem 51%. By lowering Huayou's ownership below 25%, the plant can get around US IRA regulations that prohibit tax incentives for organizations classified as "foreign entities of concern."

In order to increase competitiveness, the Gumi factory, which has a 66,000-ton yearly capacity, employs next-generation technology that calcines metals directly rather than using precursors. Toyota Tsusho will supply its cathode materials to battery clients in North America.

Moreover, with initiatives in Tennessee, Cheongju, Gumi, and Wuxi, LG Chem is growing its worldwide supply chain. Toyota Tsusho's involvement, according to Vice Chairman Shin Hak-cheol, is a significant step in complying with IRA regulations and enhancing LG Chem's position as the market leader for battery materials worldwide.
