The CEIR site was used by Haryana Police to retrieve and return about 4,000 stolen and lost cell phones between January and July 2025.
Haryana Police said on Tuesday that they had restored about 4,000 cell phones to their lawful owners between January and July and had had outstanding success this year in tracking down cell phones via the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) site.
The greatest number of mobile phones, 1,195, was given back to their owners in Gurugram, 609 in Sonepat, and 288 in Yamunanagar. In addition to aiding in the recovery of stolen and misplaced phones, the CEIR portal has increased public confidence. Long-drawn-out processes are no longer required of citizens. According to a police official, their cell phones can now be located in a matter of steps.
The Union government launched the CEIR portal. Every mobile phone has its own unique 15-digit IMEI number. Its IMEI number is disabled as soon as a theft or loss complaint is filed on the CEIR portal. This makes the phone unusable for criminals and guarantees that it cannot function on any Indian network. The spokesperson said that to accomplish this, a person must first make a police report, after which they must visit www.ceir.gov.in and provide their complaint details, mobile number, identification proof, and IMEI number.
