Construction has begun on the first net-zero energy mosques globally in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, expected to be completed by October 2025, highlighting a major step in environmental sustainability.
According to a CNN article, the mosque blends contemporary sustainable technology with traditional Islamic architectural heritage. The structure will use locally sourced materials, such as compressed earth, offering natural thermal insulation and minimizing energy consumption. It will additionally include passive cooling systems, solar panels for renewable energy production, and greywater recycling, reducing water use by 55%.
The mosque is intended to attain a LEED Platinum certification, the top global benchmark for eco-friendly buildings. The initiative highlights Abu Dhabi’s dedication to innovative green urban planning and sustainable building design.
Urban designers and architects anticipate that the mosque will act as a blueprint for eco-friendly places of worship globally. The initiative seeks to reduce its ecological impact while also motivating other mosques in the area and further afield to embrace sustainable design approaches. Through the combination of renewable energy systems, resource-efficient design, and climate-conscious architecture, the mosque illustrates the potential for religious and cultural heritage to harmonize with contemporary sustainability objectives, establishing a new standard for future developments in the Middle East and worldwide.
