Mastercard Outage Disrupts Payments Across Australia

After companies nationwide were compelled to accept alternative card payments or turn to cash transactions, Mastercard has now fully resumed operations.

Shoppers experienced inconveniences on Sunday due to a worldwide Mastercard outage, which also affected hotel firms who capitalized on Victoria's long weekend demand. The outages also affected retailers who used Tyro, an Australian point-of-sale operator, whose backend payment systems were momentarily impacted by the Mastercard outage.

After companies nationwide were compelled to accept alternative card payments or turn to cash transactions, both payment technology providers have now fully resumed operations. Both physical cards and mobile wallets experienced issues processing debit or credit transactions on Sunday night, according to Australian Mastercard customers.

Commonwealth Bank and other Mastercard-using financial services companies looked into the high-priority interruption after online outage complaints peaked just after 8 p.m. AEDT. The problem seems to stop vendors from accepting Mastercard payments on the second day of Adelaide's cashless Womad festival.

The cause of the outage was not disclosed by Mastercard. However, Sunday's technical problems weren't limited to Mastercard consumers and the companies that let those customers use Mastercard. Square, which characterized the situation as an interruption to third-party partners, was among the payment acceptance providers that were unable to process Mastercard payments due to the outage.

Shortly after 7 p.m. AEDT, Tyro, a payment technology company based in Australia, released a statement admitting to issues with Mastercard payments. On the second day of the state's Labor Day long weekend, 4 Pines x Boardriders, a restaurant and bar catering to surf coast patrons in Torquay, Victoria, was among the impacted Tyro businesses.
