Los Angeles experienced major destruction and evacuations due to wildfires in Pacific Palisades and Eaton Canyon, fueled by high winds and dry conditions. Authorities are investigating causes.
A wildfire in Pacific Palisades, California, has caused intense fire, about 4.6 square miles of land, sending thick smoke into the sky and making it visible across Los Angeles. People living as far away as Venice Beach, which is six miles away from the flames, reported seeing the fire. Evacuation orders were issued for around 30,000 residents, and major roads like Interstate 10 and the Pacific Coast Highway were closed to keep everyone safe and sound from the fire.
Some residents got themselves stuck as roads were not visible and therefore could not be passed. According to various news sources, Kelsey Trainor, who lives in Pacific Palisades, shared her experience of being trapped while ash fell around her and flames burned on both sides of the road. The fire also disrupted everyday life causing movie studios to cancel premieres, and schools in the area had to relocate students.
While the exact cause of the fire is still unknown, reports suggest that strong winds played a big part spreading the fire, which started around 10:30 a.m., right when a Santa Ana windstorm hit the region. Southern California has been experiencing dry weather with little than less rain since May, creating perfect circumstances for wildfires to occur.
Moreover, the National Weather Service declared that winds could get even stronger overnight, with the speed potentially reaching up to 100 mph in nearby mountains. This makes it harder for firefighters to control the blaze and raises concerns about new fires starting. As firefighters continue to extinguish the flames, the community remains alert, hoping and praying for safety.
