Many Tibetan exiles in Dharamshala came together at Tsuglagkhang Temple for an overnight prayer to remember the people who died in the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Dingri County, Tibet.
More than 126 people were killed and 188 injured when a heavy earthquake hit Tibet on Tuesday morning. The quake struck at 9:05 am local time, with range of 10km. The China Earthquake Networks Center recorded a magnitude of 6.8, while the US Geological Survey measured it at 7.1.
Tremors were also felt in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital and parts of northern India, where people ran out of their homes. However, no damage was reported. The Bihar Disaster Management Department said tremors were felt in several districts near the India-Nepal border.
The National Centre for Seismology recorded two more aftershocks, with magnitudes of 4.7 and 4.9. In response, disaster relief supplies, such as tents, food, first aid and quilts were sent to the affected areas. The earthquake struck in a region with about 62,000 people, near the base of Everest. While earthquakes are common here, this was the strongest in the past five years within a certain radius.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for extensive search and rescue operations, and more than thousand workers were sent to help. China also closed its side of Mount Everest for tourists. The Qomolangma Station in Dingri is experiencing a power outage, though the hotel buildings remain intact. In Kathmandu, people were reminded of the 2015 earthquake that killed 9,000, as tremors shook trees and power lines.
