Department of Transportation Funds $635M for Expanding EV’s

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) revealed $635 million in funding last week to continue developing electric vehicle (EV) charging and alternative fueling infrastructure.

The grants support 49 projects that will install over 11,500 EV charging points as well as hydrogen and natural gas fuelling infrastructure, along corridors and in towns throughout 27 states.

Jeff Marootian, Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy stated that this financing demonstrates the synergy in government efforts to optimize federal expenditures. It will expand on the Department of Energy's work to educate the 21st-century energy workforce and equip the grid to power zero-emission fueling infrastructure statewide.

The additional charging and refueling facilities will provide more accessible transportation alternatives, generate new employment, and open up innovation opportunities in communities nationwide.

Projects using hydrogen refueling infrastructure include the Port Authority of Houston, which will receive around $25M to build and maintain a hydrogen fuelling station for big vehicles in Bayport, Texas. The initiative contributes to national strategies for transportation and clean hydrogen. The station will provide high-volume fueling, public access, and assistance for tube-trailer fueling.
