Parental habits and relationships shape adolescent attitudes
A new study by Washington State University reveals that teens who perceive their parents as cannabis and CBD users are more likely to develop favorable views about the drug and consider trying it themselves. The research underscores the critical role of parental monitoring and the strength of parent-child relationships in shaping adolescent attitudes toward cannabis, with notable differences based on the parent’s gender.
Published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies, the study sheds light on how parents’ behaviors and interactions influence teen perspectives, especially in states like Washington, where cannabis is legal. Lead researcher Stacey J. T. Hust, a professor of communication at WSU, emphasized, “Parents need to recognize that their use matters. If teens think their parents use cannabis, it can signal that the behavior is acceptable, particularly without clear boundaries and conversations about the risks.”
The study surveyed 276 adolescents aged 13-17 in Washington. Key findings showed that 32% believed their fathers used cannabis, while 25% thought the same of their mothers. These perceptions often correlated with lower negative attitudes and a higher likelihood of trying the drug.
Interestingly, the gender of the parent also influenced outcomes. Teens close to non-using mothers were less likely to consider cannabis, while closeness to cannabis-using mothers or fathers generally fostered positive attitudes toward the drug. Additionally, parental monitoring proved vital, particularly for boys, as higher supervision levels were linked to stronger anti-cannabis attitudes.
This research highlights the importance of proactive communication and monitoring to guide teens toward healthier choices.
