According to the senior ITU official, work has to be done on a uniform global governance framework for digital technologies, particularly with regard to the moral application of AI.
According to a senior International Telecommunication Union official, telecom technology standards are playing a significant role in determining the global governance of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), at this moment.
Doreen Bogdan-Martin the Secretary General of ITU said that they have seen how AI standards can help to build trust safety and level that playing field for innovation. It occurs at a moment when talks about global governance are shifting their focus to standards.
She was giving a speech at the World Telecommunication Standards Assembly 2024 and the Indian Mobile Congress 2024 combined meeting, which was held in New Delhi.
She went on to say that they should develop a unified global governance framework for digital technologies, particularly with regard to the moral application of AI.
The ITU is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN), situated in Geneva.
Countries are having difficulty bringing under the purview of AI regulations given the lack of a unified regulatory framework.
According to her, it is imperative that general ideas be transformed into precise, enforceable criteria in order to guarantee that AI functions safely and equitably for everybody.
In addition, she stated that emerging nations must close the skills and compute gaps in AI since, similar to the lack of processing capacity, many lack the skilled labor force necessary to take full advantage of AI's current advantages.
The official said that nations must invest in local talent and skills in order to create the most reliable platform for AI knowledge, skills, and experience in the world.
