Shannon Estuary

A €32m investment will help Shannon Foynes Port and the EU's 'Connecting Europe Facility' fund the company's plan to turn the Estuary into a global offshore wind hub and a freight logistics cluster. This will alleviate congestion in the Irish supply chain network.

By connecting the current east and west jetties at Foynes Port, an extra 117 meters of jetty and 12,000 square meters of jetty set/down storage have been provided as part of the two-year work program. It has also produced one of Ireland's most advanced port logistics parks, which is close by. It is a 38-hectare site that has already been granted planning approval for 127,000 square feet and has the capacity to create an additional 400,000 square feet of contemporary logistics warehousing.

Officially launching the expansion of the new port facilities were James Lawless TD (FF), Minister of State at the Department of Transport, who holds special responsibility for International and Road Transport and Logistics, and Patrick O'Donovan TD (FG), Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science.

Speaking at the function, Minister Lawless stated that as Ireland is an island nation and 90% of its traded products travel through its ports, the ports are vital to the country's economy. One of Ireland's three Tier 1 ports, Shannon Foynes, has provided exceptional service to this region of the island. However, this expansion reflects the port's goal and chance to make a significant national and international impact in the offshore energy and logistics supply chain sectors.
