As the Ram production shuts down, Stellantis is laying off as many as 2,450 factory workers from its Warren Truck assembly plant north of Detroit.
According to the corporation, the layoffs will begin as early as October 8 as the plant switches from a two-shift to a one-shift general assembly operating pattern. The company stated that there will be a single shift for the Jeep Wagoneer assembly at the same location. The business is refocusing on the Ram 1500 Tradesman pickup, which is made at its Sterling Heights Assembly factory, as production of the Ram 1500 Classic comes to an end later this year.
According to a business representative, the new 2025 Ram 1500 Tradesman offers amazing value and content. Modern electrical architecture makes it possible for business fleets to use new technologies that enhance safety systems and tracking.
The United Auto Workers union represents over 3,700 workers at the facility. Stellantis verified that union members who are laid off will receive 52 weeks of transition help in addition to 52 weeks of extra unemployment payments paid by the employer. Additionally, they will have two years of health insurance. After an unprecedented six-week walkout, the UAW and Stellantis negotiated new labor agreements last September.
The latest in a string of cost-cutting initiatives CEO Carlos Tavares is putting in place at the company's American operations, Stellantis said last week that it was opening up a fresh round of voluntary buyouts to its salaried employees in the United States. Tavares mentioned shortcomings in at least two of the company's U.S. plants during the company's Investor Day in June, though he wouldn't identify them.
