Samsung grid stability smart home energy system

Samsung has introduced a new feature for its SmartThings platform to manage energy usage during peak demand.

The program, known as Flex Connect, is presently offered in California and New York and integrates with the business' energy management system, SmartThings Energy.

Flex Connect uses the AI Energy Mode in SmartThings to automate the response of appliances and other connected devices to demand response events. Utilizing Samsung goods, this intelligent system can reduce energy use by up to 70% by learning household routines and adjusting energy use depending on user-defined targets.

Flex Connect may automatically turn on AI Energy Mode to save energy in compatible appliances, turn off devices (including plugs and lights from third parties), and modify compatible thermostats to lower energy usage when a utility company delivers a demand response signal.

Participants in the program may receive cash incentives. Customers who pay time-of-use rates can see a decrease in their energy costs, and those who participate might get cash refunds from their utility companies. Through Flex Connect, Samsung is providing an additional incentive in the form of Samsung Rewards points that can be redeemed for merchandise on Samsung.com.

Flex Connect has a user-friendly, adaptable design. The devices that participants enroll in the program on can be changed at any moment. Users can manually modify their energy usage by receiving alerts through SmartThings Energy when an event occurs, even in the absence of connected appliances.

The majority of devices that are compatible are Samsung appliances; however, there are also a few supported products from third parties. These include Wemo, TP-Link, Aeotec, Ecobee, Sengled, and Resideo (Honeywell Home) smart plugs, lights, and thermostats. The system works with Powerwall and Loop EV chargers, among other Tesla devices.

Samsung's involvement in the Matter smart home standard allows for more compatible devices. The platform has been expanded to include new features such as major appliances and energy reporting. Flex Connect aims to create a more responsive and efficient energy infrastructure, reducing strain on the grid and potentially preventing blackouts.
