Plast Nepal 2024 and GeoMandu 2024, Nepal promotes innovation, and green growth while promoting sustainability and economic growth.
Nepal hosted two large international events in Kathmandu that showcase Nepal's growing commitment to sustainability and economic development. The recent 4th Plast Nepal 2024 and 2nd GeoMandu 2024 came together a wide array of professionals within their respective fields, businesses, and policymaking to discuss advancements in their fields. More than 150 people representing five different nations were present at the three-day Plast Nepal 2024 expo organized by India's Plastic Export Promotion Council at Brikutimandap.
This event also featured forty-five exhibitions showcasing Indian companies, and it served as a platform to enable business-to-business collaborations in South Asia's plastics sector. The exhibition was opened by Damodar Bhandari, Nepal's Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Supplies. Bhandari stated the importance of public to private partnerships in promoting economic activity. In order to promote local investors, Bhandari also confirmed the government's dedication to modifying regulations to increase exports and replace imports with local manufacture.
In Nepal, the plastic industry is experiencing rapid growth due to an increase in consumer demand and urbanization and is estimated to generate NPR 60 billion (approximately USD 500 m). More than 500 manufacturing units are primarily located in and around Kathmandu and contribute significantly to the national economy. In 2023 and 2024, India, the largest supplier of plastic products to Nepal, exported plastic products worth $11.6 billion around the world.
The second edition of GeoMandu 2024 organized by the Nepal Geotechnical Society came together geotechnical engineers, geoscientists, investigators and experts from across the world. In addition, specialists and keynote speakers from India, the USA, South Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, and New Zealand discussed advances in civil engineering. Discussions on environmentally sound solutions to problems related to urbanization and worldwide trends focused on infrastructure development
