From June 26, new rules under the Telecommunications Act 2023 will change the number of SIM cards. As per the latest notification from the central government, individuals will be issued a maximum of nine SIM cards on their behalf. Restrictions are also stricter for residents of Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern states, with only six SIM cards per person.
This new regulation aims to enhance security and prevent SIM card fraud across the country. It comes as part of a broader effort to curb fraudulent activity and improve the integrity of the entire telecommunications industry.
Penalties for exceeding these limits can be severe. Possession of more than the permitted number of SIM cards can result in a fine ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh. Anyone who violates this rule for the first time will be fined Rs 50,000. However, if the rules are violated, the fine for each subsequent offense can go up significantly to Rs 2 lakh.
The bill also includes stringent measures against those who cheat others to obtain SIM cards. Using another identity card to obtain a SIM card can result in a three-year jail term, a fine of Rs 50 lakh, or both The measure aims to prevent identity theft and ensure that their SIM is redeemed all cards are normally atomized.
Additionally, the Act addresses unsolicited commercial messages. If a telecom operator sends commercial messages without the consent of the subscriber, the penalty can go up to Rs 2 lakh. In extreme cases, the company may even be prohibited from providing services.
