Brazilian plus-size designer Amanda Momente, who started her own clothing company after being unable to find anything that fit, confidently stands for the camera, defying the fashion industry's limited definition of beauty.
Although Momente is a part of a growing movement of activists, models, and entrepreneurs who are fed up with a fashion industry that they claim fails to meet their demands and shames them for their bodies, more than half of all adults in Brazil are overweight.
Wondersize is the startup that 34-year-old Momente started in 2017. The idea came to the former real estate agent, when she was at the gym and felt uncomfortable wearing garments that were either too tight or turned translucent when stretched or bunched up around her legs.
In order to create her own fitness attire, she made the decision to locate a seamstress. She claims that things worked out so well that she left her day job and dove right into the fashion industry.
The growth of fashionable, colorful clothing for large-framed Brazilians is a part of a global movement that rejects unattainable beauty standards, particularly for women.
Momente advocates for all bodies to fit the fashion industry, while Marcela Liz, head of the Brazil Plus Size Association, states that major brands often only offer a small portion of their larger clothing ranges.
