Parkinson's patients walk and experience fewer falls thanks to Harvard's robotic exoskeleton

Soft robotic exoskeletons can help Parkinson patients with their mobility problems, according to new research from a joint Harvard and Boston University team that was published in Nature Medicine.

You're probably aware of the two main categories if you keep up with the field of robotic exoskeletons. The first is specifically directed at employees who perform demanding or repetitive tasks like lifting and moving products. The second is assistive, mostly geared toward people who have trouble moving about.

"Freezing" is a common problem affecting walking abilities and raising the risk of falls in those with Parkinson's disease. People with the symptom lose their balance when walking, taking shorter steps until stopping completely.

Many approaches, including medication, physical therapy, and surgery, have been made to address the problem; however, the effectiveness of the current solutions is restricted.

The wearable robotic device from Harvard is equipped with sensors that can identify movement and apply algorithms to determine the gait of the walker. Actuators powered by cables engage to facilitate walking in mid-stride.

A 73-year-old Parkinson's patient who experienced freezing more than ten times per day was treated by researchers. Walsh and colleagues conducted a six-month study in which they successfully prevented patients from freezing while they were indoors. They were consequently able to travel farther and quicker.

Harvard reports that the impact happened right away. The patient was able to walk without freezing indoors and with just sporadic episodes outdoors without the need for any extra training. Without the gadget, he was also able to walk and talk without freezing, which was unusual.
