General Motors is collaborating with Google to investigate ways to deploy AI technologies across the company's operations.

The firms said Tuesday that they are collaborating to explore ways to apply AI technologies across the automaker's operations. The wide collaboration between the Detroit automaker and Google Cloud business on generative, or conversational, AI builds on prior work between the two firms on GM's OnStar Interactive Virtual Assistant (IVA), which will launch in 2022.

According to GM, the IVA system is powered by "intent-recognition algorithms" that employ Google Cloud's conversational AI technologies to provide OnStar users with answers to common questions as well as routing and navigation assistance. GM previously stated that it was investigating potential applications for ChatGPT as part of its larger collaboration with Microsoft.

The prospective uses of artificial intelligence, including the well-known ChatGPT, have emerged as a rising discussion in the automotive sector, as they have in other industries. Vehicle validation, software, and in-car support services such as OnStar are possible use cases.
