Frank Beard, legendary rock band’s former drummer has died at the age of 77. Beard passed away on 17th August 2026 while in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas after spending his family.

Health Challenges and Setbacks

The legendary drummer had faced multiple challenges throughout his journey. In particular, Beard was in the 70s struggling with drug addiction which led him to quit the band. However, the situation turned around when he kicked addiction and re joined ZZ Top.

The drummer recently faced a different challenge which saw him cancel his tour with the band in 2025. Specifically, Beard was forced to stop touring with ZZ Top after he developed an illness. In addition to the illness, the 77 year old stated that he could no longer tour because of the physical demands that the tours imposed. Beard has completely ended his touring career while also canceling the recent concerts by ZZ Top.

Upon Beard’s demise, one of his contemporaries and band member, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons released a statement recalling the experiences with Beard.

According to Gibbons, Beard was a “naturally innovative drummer” whose “unique backbeat always brought a sense of specialness to our performances.”

Moreover, Billy Gibbons noted that as long as Beard wanted to make music, they would continue making great music. Indeed, Gibbons released a heartfelt message recalling the death of the great drummer as an end of an era of his life.
