India marks one year of the Pahalgam attack as PM Modi honors victims and reaffirms zero tolerance for terrorism. Military response and ceasefire explained.

India on Wednesday marks one year since the devastating Pahalgam attack, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying tribute to Pahalgam victims and reaffirming the country’s firm stance against terrorism.

In a message shared on X, Modi remembered the 26 lives lost in what remains one of the most brutal attacks on civilians in recent years. “They will never be forgotten,” he said, adding that the nation stands united in grief and determination. He emphasized that India will never bow to terror and that those responsible for such acts will ultimately fail.

The attack occurred on April 22, 2025, when heavily armed militants targeted tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The assailants, linked to The Resistance Front, an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba, carried out a frightening assault by identifying victims based on religion. They reportedly forced individuals to recite the Islamic ‘kalima’ before opening fire on those who could not.

Among the Pahalgam attack victims were 25 tourists and a local pony ride operator who lost his life while trying to protect others. Several victims were newly married and many were shot at close range in front of their families, leaving a deep scar on the nation’s collective memory.

In the aftermath, India launched a series of military responses. ‘Operation Sindoor,’ conducted on May 6 and 7 targeting key terror places across the border. Officials described the strikes as precise and non-escapable. Pakistan responded with drone intrusions and shelling, hitting civilian and religious sites, which led to further retaliatory action by India, including strikes on strategic installations.

Tensions eased after Pakistan’s military leadership reached out for talks, leading to a ceasefire agreement on May 10, 2025. Simultaneously, ‘Operation Mahadev’ was initiated to track down those directly responsible for the attack. After an extensive 93-day search across rugged Himalayan terrain, Indian forces neutralized the attackers, covering over 300 square kilometres in the process.

The Indian Army, in a statement, asserted that justice had been delivered, strengthening the country’s unified resolve against terrorism. As the nation reflects on the tragedy and its consequences, Business Fortune notes that India’s resolve remains grounded in unity, resilience and a clear stand against terrorism.
